How To: Download Facebook Email Addresses
http://blog.kevindonahue.com/archives/2010/03/13/how_to_download_facebook_email_addresses/
So you've got umpteen million friends on Facebook that you haven't gotten in touch with for a while and you would like to email them more often.
The only problem is that you don't have their email address in your Outlook, Mail.app, iPhone, Gmail, or phone address book.
So what you need is a way to download email address from your Facebook friends to your computer, iPhone, Gmail, phone, Mac, etc… right?
Read on….
Downloading your friends' email addresses from Facebook is not made to be easy, but there is a perfectly legal, perfectly legitimate "backdoor" way to do it involving Yahoo Mail.
(This is the part of the How To where I tell you that you need to have a Yahoo email account, so if you don't – go sign up for one.)
To export your Facebook friends' email addresses, to to address.yahoo.com and click the Facebook icon. A Facebook login window will appear.
Sign-in with your Facebook password and Yahoo will begin copying all of your friends email addresses to your Yahoo Mail Account.
Once the import is done, go to the TOOLS tab and select export (or just click here!) and select either a CSV file format or the vCard, Zip of .VCF files format. (I prefer the vCard, Zip of .VCF files for Mac users, because I can add contacts selectively and even merge the information with my existing contacts).
Stumped? The originators of this lesson have a video that makes it all easy to understand…

Closing the New Frontier

Closing the New Frontier
By the end of this year, there will be no shuttle, no U.S. manned space program, no way for us to get into space. We're not talking about Mars or the moon here. We're talking about low-Earth orbit, which the U.S. has dominated for nearly half a century and from which it is now retiring with nary a whimper.
Our absence from low-Earth orbit was meant to last a few years, the interval between the retirement of the fatally fragile space shuttle and its replacement with the Constellation program (Ares booster, Orion capsule, Altair lunar lander) to take astronauts more cheaply and safely back to space.
But the Obama 2011 budget kills Constellation. Instead, we shall have nothing. For the first time since John Glenn flew in 1962, the U.S. will have no access of its own for humans into space — and no prospect of getting there in the foreseeable future.
It's in the hands of Congress now, which is not exactly a comforting thought.

http://blog.kevindonahue.com/archives/2010/02/08/is_it_mathematically_impossible_to_pay_off_the_us_debt/
If all money owned by all American banks, businesses and individuals was gathered up today and sent to the U.S. government, there would not be enough to pay off the U.S. national debt.

It's not a space program, it is our destiny
http://blog.kevindonahue.com/archives/2010/02/06/its_not_a_space_program_it_is_our_destiny/
The President's proposed 2011 budget includes plans to halt NASA's progress towards returning Americans to the Moon, establishing a permanent lunar base, and — eventually — the manned exploration of Mars.
Supporting NASA's Constellation program is not simply about watching astronauts bounce around on the Moon. The technologies created & tested in support of this mission and the discoveries to come will shape our global society and provide innovations that will impact every aspect of our lives – from the products we use every day, to the way we create & consume energy, to the lifesaving treatments & advances that better our lives.
NASA's Constellation project (which has already built, tested, and launched rockets into space) doesn't merely represent the future of NASA or American leadership, but rather the future of mankind's exploration of space.
I urge you to watch this outline video, to read about the program, evaluate opinions such as those from Popular Mechanics and to consider raising your voice in support of Constellation.

For some reason or another, I've been offline this week. I've checked email, but – other than jumping on Facebook to catch up on some family matters – I really haven't spent much time online. I wish I could say that I spent my offline time accomplishing great things but sadly that is not the case, unless you consider being 100% up-to-speed with season eight of 24.
So… if I missed your tweet or post or status update, it wasn't intentional. (Sure… right… that's the ticket!)
Yall send me a smoke signal and I'll get caught up.

The must-have conversation for men
http://blog.kevindonahue.com/archives/2009/11/16/the_must-have_conversation_for_men/
How many men age 40 or older will die of a sudden, massive heart attack? Go ahead – take a guess.
1 out of 100? Nope.
1 out of 50? No.
1 out of 25? Warmer.
1 out of 10? Warmer still.
1 out of 8? Bingo.
One out of eight men age 40 or older will die of a sudden, massive heart attack, according to a new American Heart Association study detailed today in the Wall Street Journal.
Even more startling is the fact that 1 out of every 2 men age 40 or older will develop coronary heart disease. 1 out of 2! 50 percent!
Men, we all fear our own mortality but this is a conversation that you must have with your doctor.
And, ladies, you need to ensure that the men in your life are talking to their doctor about their own personal risk factors.
For obvious reasons, this issue hits home with me, but it doesn't have to hit your home.
Don't be a statistic – talk to your doctor.

Merrin found a great dog park here on the island and — quite honestly — Oliver is in love with the place.
They have lots of toys, a garden pond, a bone-shaped splash pool, separate large dog & small dog areas, a refreshment center, and a dog wash area.
We took him there today and let him play with the big dogs (and I mean big dogs) and he had an absolute blast. He pretty much held his own with the big dogs.
Suffice it to say, Oliver is a big fan.

Life's a Beach
http://blog.kevindonahue.com/archives/2009/10/17/lifes_a_beach/
I guess it's time for an update. The moving truck came and went without incident this week. The team from Hilldrup Moving & Storage (United Van Lines) did a great job. They were efficient, safe, polite and fast. I would highly recommend them if you're considering a move in the Southeast.
Now that our stuff has made the trek, I find myself in awe (once again) of my wife. I'm amazed at just how quickly she has turned this house into our home. And it's not just arranging the furniture or unpacking the boxes, but putting the touches in place that make a place "ours".
We managed to venture out yesterday for a quick drive through town. In what is certain to become a regular occurrence, we stopped for a walk along the beach and collected more shells. It's been mentioned many, many times on my blog that I am solar powered, but I'm quite certain that my wife is hydro-powered. She loves just being near the water. I guess that's just part of what makes us so good for one another.
There's something almost magical about this place. While there's a good deal of history as The Isle of Eight Flags and as a pirate haven years ago, the town is just such a welcoming place. The people are exceptionally nice and friendly. It will take some adjusting to, but it's such a small place – population 12,000 – we don't have ten digit dialing. Since our house is so close to the ocean, we get these great, colorful sunrises each morning. At night, you can see so many stars in the sky. Perhaps it's my imagination, but I would swear – if you try hard enough – you can smell a hint of sea in the air.
Suffice to say we're adapting quite nicely to our sleepy little beach town. It's good to be "home".

T-minus 2 days
http://blog.kevindonahue.com/archives/2009/08/21/t-minus_2_days/
With just two days left before I pack up and leave Orlando, Merrin & I are taking a day to ourselves today at the Magic Kingdom. Being able to jump over to Disney whenever we please is one of Merrin's favorite things about living in Orlando, so it's only fitting that we take it in one more time before I go.
Merrin helped me get some basics together this week for my impending bachelor hood – kitchen staples, laundry stuff, and some Kevin-friendly snacks. And, since I'm without a cell phone for a short while, she was smart enough to think of picking up a cheap pre-paid cellphone a la Jason Bourne.
I'm excited to start my new job and to begin the next "NEXT" of our lives. I wish we didn't have to be apart & we weren't facing another big move, but… that's just not reality.
The reality is the hard part is just about to begin.
The reality is that way more than "fair share" will fall on Merrin and I can't do anything more than feel guilty.
The reality is that it will be a few weeks before I see Merrin & the dogs again and perhaps months before we're finally back together.
The reality is that I'll be living alone in a hotel room for the next month or more.
The reality is that our long familiar dance – fifteen years in the making – will be interrupted while we lead separated, but not quite separate, lives.
The reality… sucks.
But… the reality is… this is just temporary and – soon – we'll all be together with many blank pages ahead of us as we write this new chapter.

Best & Worst Cities to Look for a Job
http://blog.kevindonahue.com/archives/2009/08/18/best_worst_cities_to_look_for_a_job/
I was understandably interested in this Techcrunch post highlighting Indeed's June 2009 data on the best & worst cities in which to look for a job.
Not surprisingly, the top three are:
Washington, DC
Jacksonville, FL
Baltimore, MD
Why "not surprisingly"? Well, if you've been playing along on the home version of "Where is Kevin today?", you might recall that I've been to those areas repeatedly over the last three weeks. Of course, trends are just compilations and not specific to any one industry, so… grain of salt.
One place I haven't been having much success? Orlando, which is ranked #42 out of 50… and falling.
As for me, no big announcements to make just yet. As I've said before, I've got a lot of irons in a quite a few fires – and it looks like we're making very good progress.

Day 761 on Twitter
http://blog.kevindonahue.com/archives/2009/08/09/day_761_on_twitter/
So today is Day #761 for me on Twitter. I passed the two year mark on July 10th while we were in the Maasai Mara, according to the folks at When Did You Join Twitter. (I wish I had known, I would have raised a Tusker!)
How do I tweet? Well, I'm glad you asked. I've tried just about every tool out there, but my current favorite twitter application for Mac is Tweetie by atebits. If you're on an iPhone or iPod Touch, they make a great "app for that", too!
While I didn't get Twitter at first, it's now become an indispensable part of how I communicate with my friends, family, and the greater global community. As my understanding of Twitter has grown, so my has engagement, as evidenced by my Tweetstats.
As you can see, I'm not a huge tweeter – just roughly four tweets per day – but there's a huge uptick in my use of Twitter since April 2009. I'm really happy to say it's not just me shouting from the mountaintops. Instead, it's me interacting with other users. That has been a great upside to really engaging with Twitter.
Which begs the question: Are we connected on Twitter? Please tweet me @kevindonahue!

ABC NEWS: Geithner Won’t Rule Out New Taxes For Middle Class. Hey, wait, I thought Obama promised that no one making less than $250,000 a year would see a tax increase?
(Bumped). Maybe this is why we’re seeing this kind of thing.
UPDATE: Refusing to make the hard choices.
Congressional Republicans lost their majority, in large part, because they refused to make the hard choices voters elected them to make, to stand up to interest groups and lobbyists and hold the line on government spending. Democrats did well these past two election cycles in large measure because the people had lost confidence in Republicans’ abilities to make such choices.
Now, we see Democrats refusing to make such choices and contending that their only “choice” is to make a very hard choice, Obama’s campaign promise notwithstanding, and raise taxes on the middle class.
Will we ever elect politicians who choose to cut spending?
When cutting spending is better for them than increasing it, they’ll cut. And not until then.

Two years ago I lamented that no one made single-serve salsa cups.
Just a quick thought/question: Why don't they make single-serve salsa cups?
We've got single applesauce, ranch dressing cups, pudding cups, and even Tostitos Nacho Cheese cup singles.
Why can't salsa get any love? I would have thought the brains at Campbell's (who own Pace Foods) would be all over this. But… since they're not… just send me the royalty checks (or at least a free lifetime supply!)
Well — just as America finally bought into my trash bill discounts for recycling idea (five years after the fact!) — the good folks at Chi-Chi's have finally come through with single-serve salsa cups.
