PBS will broadcast their POV special entitled Wo Ai Ni (I Love You), Mommy on Tuesday, August 31st. The documentary looks at the adoption of 8-year-old Fang Sui Yong from China and the difficulties that adopted children, particularly older orphans, face in finding their identity in a new and unfamiliar world. We will be going to the US Immigration and Citizenship office in Jacksonville this week to be fingerprinted as one of the final steps in completing the Petition for Adoption. And while nothing has been normal in our four & a half year adoption saga, the customary timeline would seem to indicate that we may be traveling to China in late September or early October. It's a great feeling to know that we're going somewhere this week where they may actually refer to us as Jack's parents!

IN CONGRESS, JULY 4, 1776 The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America When in the Course of human events it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation. We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, — That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. But if you don't have the patience to wait for Facebook to update your Notes, you can manually refresh the Notes app and force Facebook to re-import your RSS feed in just two steps. Go to your Facebook Profile and click on the Settings link to the right of your Wall. Under Imported Sites, click on the Blog/RSS hyperlink and click “Update Now”.

Consumer protection groups seek FTC oversight of Facebook
Time and time again Facebook has rewritten it's own user privacy policies, with each subsequent change releasing more private information into the public domain. In the wake of the most recent changes, fifteen consumer protection groups filed a complaint against Facebook with the Federal Trade Commission, accusing Facebook of unfair and deceptive trade practices and violating consumer protection laws. "Facebook continues to manipulate the privacy settings of users and its own privacy policy so that it can take personal information provided by users for a limited purpose and make it widely available for commercial purposes," reads the letter. "The company has done this repeatedly and users are becoming increasingly angry and frustrated." For it's part, Facebook says its done nothing wrong. Analysis may prove that Facebook hasn't broken the law, but there's no question that the expectation of privacy that users once had when using the service has been eroded significantly with little recourse for users, with Facebook retaining your data even if you delete it from the site. Yes, you read that right. Facebook continues to hold user data even if you delete it. The backlash against Facebook seems to be building. It will be interesting to see if Facebook chooses to protect user privacy before a strong competitor can emerge.

The Evolution of the Boy Scouts

I think most people know that I'm an Eagle Scout, so it's with great interest that I make note of the Boy Scouts of America's efforts to bridge the great divide between traditional scouting skills and the 21st century. Case in point: The Boy Scouts have introduced a Geocaching merit badge. For those that aren't familiar, geocaching generally involves using a GPS device to follow a trail and locate landmarks. In other words, it's quite similar to the traditional Orienteering merit badge that teaches scouts to use a compass to follow a trail and locate landmarks. Not only does the new badge have real-world applications for understanding how GPS works, but it also helps to keep the Boy Scouts relevant and interesting to a wide audience. While there will always be a place for the core BSA merit badges, I think this is an outstanding step in the evolution of the Boy Scouts. Kudos, BSA.

I like the convenience of bottled water, but I confess refilling my empty bottle several times a day rather than trashing it and opening a new bottle. The result means I'm drinking more tap water in progressively funky bottles. Not good. Not good. The fix to funky water bottles? The Water Bobble. So you've got umpteen million friends on Facebook that you haven't gotten in touch with for a while and you would like to email them more often. The only problem is that you don't have their email address in your Outlook, Mail.app, iPhone, Gmail, or phone address book. So what you need is a way to download email address from your Facebook friends to your computer, iPhone, Gmail, phone, Mac, etc… right? Read on….
Downloading your friends' email addresses from Facebook is not made to be easy, but there is a perfectly legal, perfectly legitimate "backdoor" way to do it involving Yahoo Mail. (This is the part of the How To where I tell you that you need to have a Yahoo email account, so if you don't – go sign up for one.) To export your Facebook friends' email addresses, to to address.yahoo.com and click the Facebook icon. A Facebook login window will appear. Sign-in with your Facebook password and Yahoo will begin copying all of your friends email addresses to your Yahoo Mail Account. Once the import is done, go to the TOOLS tab and select export (or just click here!) and select either a CSV file format or the vCard, Zip of .VCF files format. (I prefer the vCard, Zip of .VCF files for Mac users, because I can add contacts selectively and even merge the information with my existing contacts). Stumped? The originators of this lesson have a video that makes it all easy to understand…

Closing the New Frontier
By the end of this year, there will be no shuttle, no U.S. manned space program, no way for us to get into space. We're not talking about Mars or the moon here. We're talking about low-Earth orbit, which the U.S. has dominated for nearly half a century and from which it is now retiring with nary a whimper. Our absence from low-Earth orbit was meant to last a few years, the interval between the retirement of the fatally fragile space shuttle and its replacement with the Constellation program (Ares booster, Orion capsule, Altair lunar lander) to take astronauts more cheaply and safely back to space. But the Obama 2011 budget kills Constellation. Instead, we shall have nothing. For the first time since John Glenn flew in 1962, the U.S. will have no access of its own for humans into space — and no prospect of getting there in the foreseeable future. It's in the hands of Congress now, which is not exactly a comforting thought.

The President's proposed 2011 budget includes plans to halt NASA's progress towards returning Americans to the Moon, establishing a permanent lunar base, and — eventually — the manned exploration of Mars. Supporting NASA's Constellation program is not simply about watching astronauts bounce around on the Moon. The technologies created & tested in support of this mission and the discoveries to come will shape our global society and provide innovations that will impact every aspect of our lives – from the products we use every day, to the way we create & consume energy, to the lifesaving treatments & advances that better our lives. NASA's Constellation project (which has already built, tested, and launched rockets into space) doesn't merely represent the future of NASA or American leadership, but rather the future of mankind's exploration of space. I urge you to watch this outline video, to read about the program, evaluate opinions such as those from Popular Mechanics and to consider raising your voice in support of Constellation.

Bingo. One out of eight men age 40 or older will die of a sudden, massive heart attack, according to a new American Heart Association study detailed today in the Wall Street Journal. Even more startling is the fact that 1 out of every 2 men age 40 or older will develop coronary heart disease. 1 out of 2! 50 percent! Men, we all fear our own mortality but this is a conversation that you must have with your doctor. And, ladies, you need to ensure that the men in your life are talking to their doctor about their own personal risk factors. For obvious reasons, this issue hits home with me, but it doesn't have to hit your home. Don't be a statistic – talk to your doctor.

They have lots of toys, a garden pond, a bone-shaped splash pool, separate large dog & small dog areas, a refreshment center, and a dog wash area. We took him there today and let him play with the big dogs (and I mean big dogs) and he had an absolute blast. He pretty much held his own with the big dogs. Suffice it to say, Oliver is a big fan.

Life's a Beach

I guess it's time for an update. The moving truck came and went without incident this week. The team from Hilldrup Moving & Storage (United Van Lines) did a great job. They were efficient, safe, polite and fast. I would highly recommend them if you're considering a move in the Southeast. Now that our stuff has made the trek, I find myself in awe (once again) of my wife. I'm amazed at just how quickly she has turned this house into our home. And it's not just arranging the furniture or unpacking the boxes, but putting the touches in place that make a place "ours". We managed to venture out yesterday for a quick drive through town. In what is certain to become a regular occurrence, we stopped for a walk along the beach and collected more shells. It's been mentioned many, many times on my blog that I am solar powered, but I'm quite certain that my wife is hydro-powered. She loves just being near the water. I guess that's just part of what makes us so good for one another. There's something almost magical about this place. While there's a good deal of history as The Isle of Eight Flags and as a pirate haven years ago, the town is just such a welcoming place. The people are exceptionally nice and friendly. It will take some adjusting to, but it's such a small place – population 12,000 – we don't have ten digit dialing. Since our house is so close to the ocean, we get these great, colorful sunrises each morning. At night, you can see so many stars in the sky. Perhaps it's my imagination, but I would swear – if you try hard enough – you can smell a hint of sea in the air. Suffice to say we're adapting quite nicely to our sleepy little beach town. It's good to be "home".

Thank you all so much for your encouraging words and donations towards the American Heart Association's START! Heart Walk 5k. Merrin & I were more than a little surprised yesterday when we showed up to find more than 4,000 walkers for yesterday's event. Of course, we also had to laugh when we passed several groups of walkers who had stopped to take a smoke break… but I digress. I really appreciate you thinking of us for this very special event!

With just two days left before I pack up and leave Orlando, Merrin & I are taking a day to ourselves today at the Magic Kingdom. Being able to jump over to Disney whenever we please is one of Merrin's favorite things about living in Orlando, so it's only fitting that we take it in one more time before I go. Merrin helped me get some basics together this week for my impending bachelor hood – kitchen staples, laundry stuff, and some Kevin-friendly snacks. And, since I'm without a cell phone for a short while, she was smart enough to think of picking up a cheap pre-paid cellphone a la Jason Bourne. I'm excited to start my new job and to begin the next "NEXT" of our lives. I wish we didn't have to be apart & we weren't facing another big move, but… that's just not reality. The reality is the hard part is just about to begin. The reality is that way more than "fair share" will fall on Merrin and I can't do anything more than feel guilty. The reality is that it will be a few weeks before I see Merrin & the dogs again and perhaps months before we're finally back together. The reality is that I'll be living alone in a hotel room for the next month or more. The reality is that our long familiar dance – fifteen years in the making – will be interrupted while we lead separated, but not quite separate, lives. The reality… sucks. But… the reality is… this is just temporary and – soon – we'll all be together with many blank pages ahead of us as we write this new chapter.

I've accepted a position in Baltimore, Maryland and we'll soon be moving from Orlando to "The Old Line State". (Seriously? Is that the state nickname?!) I'm extremely excited. It's a great job for a great company and I can't wait to get started next week. (Next week!) And… we get a state song that includes the word "scum" (FINALLY!): I hear the distant thunder-hum, Maryland! The Old Line's bugle, fife, and drum, Maryland! She is not dead, nor deaf, nor dumb- Huzza! she spurns the Northern scum! She breathes! she burns! she'll come! she'll come! Maryland! My Maryland! Coolest thing of all? Maryland has FSU plates. Go Noles!!

I was understandably interested in this Techcrunch post highlighting Indeed's June 2009 data on the best & worst cities in which to look for a job.
Not surprisingly, the top three are:
Washington, DC Jacksonville, FL Baltimore, MD
Why "not surprisingly"? Well, if you've been playing along on the home version of "Where is Kevin today?", you might recall that I've been to those areas repeatedly over the last three weeks. Of course, trends are just compilations and not specific to any one industry, so… grain of salt. One place I haven't been having much success? Orlando, which is ranked #42 out of 50… and falling. As for me, no big announcements to make just yet. As I've said before, I've got a lot of irons in a quite a few fires – and it looks like we're making very good progress. In the meantime, if you're looking for a job, review or search the most recent job trends.

So today is Day #761 for me on Twitter. I passed the two year mark on July 10th while we were in the Maasai Mara, according to the folks at When Did You Join Twitter. (I wish I had known, I would have raised a Tusker!) How do I tweet? Well, I'm glad you asked. I've tried just about every tool out there, but my current favorite twitter application for Mac is Tweetie by atebits. If you're on an iPhone or iPod Touch, they make a great "app for that", too! While I didn't get Twitter at first, it's now become an indispensable part of how I communicate with my friends, family, and the greater global community. As my understanding of Twitter has grown, so my has engagement, as evidenced by my Tweetstats.
As you can see, I'm not a huge tweeter – just roughly four tweets per day – but there's a huge uptick in my use of Twitter since April 2009. I'm really happy to say it's not just me shouting from the mountaintops. Instead, it's me interacting with other users. That has been a great upside to really engaging with Twitter. (Bumped). Maybe this is why we’re seeing this kind of thing. UPDATE: Refusing to make the hard choices.
Congressional Republicans lost their majority, in large part, because they refused to make the hard choices voters elected them to make, to stand up to interest groups and lobbyists and hold the line on government spending. Democrats did well these past two election cycles in large measure because the people had lost confidence in Republicans’ abilities to make such choices. Now, we see Democrats refusing to make such choices and contending that their only “choice” is to make a very hard choice, Obama’s campaign promise notwithstanding, and raise taxes on the middle class. Will we ever elect politicians who choose to cut spending? When cutting spending is better for them than increasing it, they’ll cut. And not until then.
