iPhone users have been able to use a mobile-optimized HTML5 version of Google Translate for some time now, but they can now finally also get an honest-to-goodness app of their own just like their Android-using friends. That brings with it a number of enhancements over the basic web app, including a speak-to-translate feature with support for 15 languages, the ability to listen to your translations in 23 different languages, and a full-screen mode that lets you show your translated text to others with large, easy-to-read text. Google is still keep a few features exclusive to the Android version, however, including the still-experimental conversation mode that allows for some on-the-fly translations -- both apps are also still lacking a much-needed beatbox mode.Google Translate for iPhone hits the App Store originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 08 Feb 2011 17:17:00 EDT. Glympse is a great way to share your location
http://www.tuaw.com/2011/02/03/glympse-is-a-great-way-to-share-your-location/
Somehow we missed telling you about Glympse, the great little free app that lets you tell others where you are in real time. To get started, download Glympse to your iPhone and accept the terms of use. There are no accounts to set up or anything else to fiddle with. When you're ready to share your location, enter an email address or search your contacts. Select a contact, email or text message number and set a duration you'd like the person to be able to see your location. Seconds later, your recipient receives a link. If they are on a laptop or PC, they will see you on a Google Map -- it can be street or satellite view. Your icon will be moving in near real time, and your speed will be displayed. If you have selected a destination, it will show up on the map as well. It doesn't get easier than that. If the other person has Glympse on their phone, they have the option to have the app's built-in map display your location. If you want to cut off a viewer before their allotted time is up, you can "expire" them. You can send your location to multiple people, which they can view simultaneously. I've used the app to let people know that I'll be late for a meeting or to display my position in traffic. You can also share your locations to Facebook or Twitter. Skype for iPhone Update Supports Multitasking and Fee-Free 3G Calls [Downloads]
iOS: VoIP application Skype updated its iOS application to support iOS 4 multitasking (which means you can receive calls while other apps are running and switch to another task while keeping the call alive). They've also dropped an extra fee for calls over 3G. Skype on your iPhone 3GS and 4 just got a lot more useful. [Skype for iOS; Skype Blog] More »

Sirius-XM iPhone app coming 'real soon'
http://www.tuaw.com/2009/05/28/sirius-xm-iphone-app-coming-real-soon/
Filed under: iPhone, App Store, iPod touchSirius XM has revealed a screen shot of the soon to be released iPhone/iPod touch app that will stream the satellite channels to eager listeners. The image of the upcoming app was part of an SEC filing that was included in a PowerPoint presentation shown at a recent shareholder meeting.
The app, which is expected to be free, will require a US$3.00/month streaming subscription for current subscribers, and a US$13.00 monthly fee for non-subscribers. No specific release date is known, but it is thought to be very soon.
The company says the app will deliver music channels, sports, talk, news and comedy programming. We've already reported that Sirius had expected to offer the application this spring.
The satellite company has been in financial difficulties and has been losing subscribers faster than it is signing up new ones. The weak economy and drop off in new car sales are an especially tough environment to grow the business. The merger of XM and Sirius was generally thought to have been handled badly, and many people dropped their subscriptions, which has given a boost to internet radio and services like Pandora and Last.fm, although neither service is easily accessible in a car.TUAWSirius-XM iPhone app coming 'real soon' originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 28 May 2009 14:30:00 EST.
