7 iPad Habits of Highly Effective Remote Workers
http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/TheAppleBlog/~3/Vx0L2nQq9CQ/
The use of the iPad by mobile workers is on the rise, and that brings with it both boons and challenges for worker productivity. Here’s how you and your remote staff can stay on top of iPad usage, lest iPad usage controls you and your organization instead. 1. These Are the Apps You Need; These Are the Apps You Don’t Keep your productivity and entertainment app worlds separate on your iPad. I know it’s too much to ask that workers who are mostly using their own personal devices in the work place to use them strictly for work purposes, but everyone will be happier and better able to focus on getting work done if you keep your fun and games-related apps in a separate folder or folders. Keeping the productivity and work-related apps out in the open on the app’s home screen will give them priority seating when it comes to your attention span, and the distractions will be left just a little bit beyond finger’s reach, where they’ll be less of a temptation. 2. Carry a Keyboard The iPad is a great consumption device, but as we’ve seen, people aren’t crazy about using it for data input. Having a Bluetooth keyboard handy makes working on the iPad exponentially better. You have a few choices when it comes to which keyboard to carry. I’m personally a fan of the ZAGGmate keyboard/hard case combo, which comes in both original iPad and iPad 2 flavors, but the official Apple Wireless Keyboard is an attractive option, too. 3. Have a Wireless Strategy If you want to use the iPad to make mobile working easier, you’ll hit a wall pretty fast if you don’t have access to a reliable data connection. For users with a 3G-capable iPad, this means checking to make sure you have an active plan ready to go with the carrier of your choosing, and ensuring that your carrier offers service in the place you intend to use your iPad. If it doesn’t, shop around for a temporary carrier/SIM card for your working destination. Verizon iPad owners will want to make sure that they have something other than a simple SIM switch in place for most international destinations, which largely use GSM technology to power their networks. Finding a provider that offers a pay-as-you go mobile hotspot solution might be a good workaround. Companies can help by issuing globally-compatible mobile hotspot hardware to remote employees who travel internationally. 4. Have a Battery Backup Battery backup offerings for the iPad are many and varied, but carrying a reliable one that has enough juice to give your iPad a decent bump is a good idea. You never know when you might lose your power cord, or forget to secure an adapter before a quick stopover in an international destination. Check out Dave Greenbaum’s roundup of iPhone and iPad battery backups for a good look at some of the better options out there. 5. Enable Find My iPad Losing an iPad really sucks. But what’s worse is losing your iPad having not enabled Apple’s free Find My iPad service. Through MobileMe, Apple can help you locate a lost iPad if it’s enabled, or at the very least, you can use the service to remotely wipe your device, thereby protecting sensitive personal and work-related data. Enterprise is already nervous about the potential security hazards associated with consumer devices in the workplace; help make them less so. 6. Lock It Up It may seem obvious, but even more important than enabling Find My iPad is setting up your device to require a passcode upon waking. You can do this in the iPad’s Settings app, under General > Passcode Lock. By default, the iPad will use a simple passcode consisting of a 4 digit number, but you can turn this off, which will let you set a longer password that can combine both letters and numbers. If you’re storing sensitive information on your device, you’re better off using a complex passcode lock. 7. Invest in a Good Headset The iPad truly can be a communications hub — even for voice chat and phone calls. But it’s not perfectly suited to that task out of the box. If you get yourself a decent headset, however, you can better make and take phone calls on your device using VoIP apps, and you’ll even be better equipped for using the many video conferencing options available for the iPad 2, like that provided by Cisco’s WebEx. Share your tips for more effective iPad working in the comments. How to Prepare a Used Mac for Sale
http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/TheAppleBlog/~3/r_q-Yq2-VSw/
If you’re planning on buying a new machine, it’s a great idea to sell your old Mac to cover some of the new computer’s cost. I’m currently going through the process of preparing my machine to replace it with a new MacBook Pro, so follow along with me as I make sure the process is as painless as possible for both me and my Mac’s next owner. Back Up Your Content What would you do if you sat down at your new computer one day and realized a desperately important file was still on your old hard drive? In order to prevent from happening, you should make a backup of at least your most important files. If you have an external hard drive, that makes it easy, but if you’re only copying text documents or small numbers of photos, even a USB flash drive might be enough. I’d suggest at least making copies of your Documents and Photos folders, since they’re the folders most likely to contain important files. Or, if you’re not sure what you should keep, go whole hog and backup your entire hard drive. You can do this with a utility such as Carbon Copy Cloner, which copies a drive’s contents to another volume to keep them safe. It’s a good idea to make sure you have a large capacity external drive if you’re doing this: one that has more than enough room for your files.
Deactivate or Deauthorize Software Some applications, such as iTunes and Adobe products, require each of your computers to be authorized to use them. Before you wipe your data, make sure to deactivate any applications that need activating so they can run on your new machine. With iTunes, you can deauthorize a computer by going to Store > Deauthorize Computer. Adobe’s applications can be deactivated by going to Help > Deactivate. Deauthorizing iTunes isn’t as important as it is with Adobe’s applications, since you can deauthorize after the fact through your iTunes account. Destroy Everything Once you’re certain you have a backup of everything you could possibly ever need again, you’re going to want to erase your entire hard drive to ensure there’s nothing personal left on there. To do this, you’ll want to find the OS X install disc that came with your machine. Insert the DVD into your drive, and restart the computer holding down the C key. Instead of loading OS X from your machine, the Installer will load from the disc. Once it does, choose Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. From there, you’ll be able to select your hard drive and erase it. In order to make sure there’s no way anyone could restore any of your personal data, I’d choose Security Options and select either Zero Out Data, or if you have more time and want to be extra sure there’s nothing left, 7-Pass Erase. Everything on the drive will be overwritten, so there’s a very small chance anything could be recovered.
Of course, if you don’t want to risk even using the security options, you could always spent a small amount of money on a new hard drive and destroy the old one completely. A large hammer will do the trick, and I’m not even joking. There’s no way anyone’s getting your data back from a hard drive that’s in pieces. Reinstall OS X While the OS X install disc is still in your machine, now is a good time to reinstall the operating system. Simply run the installer from the disc. When your Mac reboots, make sure you don’t start running the Setup Assistant. The new owner of your computer will be happier to set it up as if it were a brand new Mac than have to run from the setup you set up. Once the Setup Assistant appears, just hit Command-Q to quit and eject the disc. When the Mac is next turned on, the Assistant will run and the new user can set it up however he/she wants. Give It a Cleaning No one wants to open a box to find a grubby computer covered in fingerprints and old bits of food. So give your Mac a good cleaning using a soft, damp cloth (when it’s turned off, of course). If it’s a laptop you’re selling, you could also — carefully — turn it upside-down and shake out some of the crumbs in the keyboard and in the hinge. Use a different cloth to wipe away smears and fingerprints from the screen (a microfiber or glasses cloth works well). Conclusion Once you’ve done all of the above, your Mac is ready to be passed on to another user who will hopefully take good care of it. Did I miss any vital steps? Let me know in the comments. GroupOn and the Art of Being Offended
http://www.peteholiday.com/2011/02/11/groupon-and-the-art-of-being-offended
For anyone who pays even a modicum of attention to the world around them in America, the fact that Super Bowl ads are “a thing” is not a surprise. In fact, they’ve been a thing for so long that now even jokes about it1 are cliché. They’re expensive and a great deal of attention is paid to them. Their rise to prominence in pop culture has made them even more valuable and even more watched. Hell, there are people who don’t even watch the game who spend the next day finding the ads online and watching them, if for no other reason, so that they can understand chatter around the proverbial water cooler. This makes the stakes for such an ad unfathomably high. GroupOn has a pair of ads, one of which ran during the Super Bowl, that have created quite a ruckus. One was about Tibet, the other about Brazilian rain forests. They seem to have drawn the ire of a number of busy-body, do-gooder types.
So what’s the problem? Well, as it turns out, people were offended. Very offended2. The spots touched of a media firestorm of outrage, anger, and hand-wringing. There is nothing inherently offensive about the ad. Tibet’s situation is handled as seriously and clearly as is possible in the 12 seconds (out of 30) spent on it before transitioning to the GroupOn-related part of the ad. So why are people upset? Because people enjoy feeling offended. They enjoy it more, in fact, than helping the Tibetan people. GroupOn spent more than a third of the time it paid for putting the issue facing the Tibetan people front-and-center for more than 100 million Super Bowl viewers. The vast majority of them, I’d wager, had gained most of their previously existing awareness of the issues in Tibet from cars like the one pictured above. In the commercial, right before turning his attention to the service being advertised, Actor Timothy Hutton tells us “[Tibet's] very culture is in jeopardy.” But the sudden shift raises an immediate question for those unfamiliar with the plight: Why is their culture in jeopardy? If even 0.1% of Super Bowl viewers attempted to answer that question for themselves (either by hopping onto Wikipedia or asking the nerdiest guy at their Super Bowl party), the ad would probably have done more good in 12 seconds than years and years of bumper stickers plastered on the back of hippies’ cars. If any of the viewers noticed the juxtaposition and thought “What an insulated little bubble we must live in to have trendy restaurants serving the food of an oppressed people,” you could practically visualize this happening to the person’s brain. The people raising a stink, speaking in stern tones, and wagging their fingers at GroupOn are the worst kind of advocate: the kind that believes that their cause is far too serious and important for anything but somber and depressed conversation to be made about it. They thrive on the ability to demonstrate that they take their cause far more seriously than anyone else, and they would gladly trade some of the best publicity the Tibet cause has ever received just to maintain their ability to look down their noses at people less serious than they are. Looking at this analytically, you might get the impression that they’re actually just objecting to the thought that their pet cause might become popular, robbing them of their feeling of moral and intellectual superiority over the average idiot who currently doesn’t even know what Tibet is, let alone that it needs freeing. You might also posit that most of the anger is coming from people whose lone contribution to the Tibetan cause is the passive display of a bumper sticker. People enjoy being vicariously offended because it reinforces their own perception that they’re just better than the people who aren’t offended. More enlightened. More aware. In reality, they’re just more annoying. It was a good P.R. move to apologize, but I’d really have enjoyed a giant “fuck you” with a call to action: “If you’re so offended, please feel free to donate to [some Tibet-focused charity] in the name of our rival LivingSocial.” Asking the Cult of the Offended to put their money where their mouth was would have been illuminating. I watch for the commercials, etc…Vicariously offended, of course, not personally.

Google Translate for iPhone hits the App Store
http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/08/google-translate-for-iphone-hits-the-app-store/
iPhone users have been able to use a mobile-optimized HTML5 version of Google Translate for some time now, but they can now finally also get an honest-to-goodness app of their own just like their Android-using friends. That brings with it a number of enhancements over the basic web app, including a speak-to-translate feature with support for 15 languages, the ability to listen to your translations in 23 different languages, and a full-screen mode that lets you show your translated text to others with large, easy-to-read text. Google is still keep a few features exclusive to the Android version, however, including the still-experimental conversation mode that allows for some on-the-fly translations -- both apps are also still lacking a much-needed beatbox mode.Google Translate for iPhone hits the App Store originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 08 Feb 2011 17:17:00 EDT. The Lunar New Year, or more accurately the lunisolar new year, began February 4 and in most countries that celebrate it ushered in the Year of the Rabbit according to the Chinese zodiac. In China Lunar New Year is the most important date on the calendar and triggers over a month of holiday travel which is often described as the largest annual human migration in the world. Hundreds of millions tax the transport system. The new year also marks the beginning of the Spring Festival in China which continues until the Lantern Festival on the fifteenth day. Lunar New Year is celebrated in many countries, with many different traditions as well. Gathered here are pictures of China's travel wave and celebrations, as well as pictures from other countries' Lunar New Year observations. -- Lane Turner (40 photos total)An artist performs at Xuanwu Lake Park to greet the Chinese New Year February 2, 2011 in Nanjing, China. Glympse is a great way to share your location
http://www.tuaw.com/2011/02/03/glympse-is-a-great-way-to-share-your-location/
Somehow we missed telling you about Glympse, the great little free app that lets you tell others where you are in real time. To get started, download Glympse to your iPhone and accept the terms of use. There are no accounts to set up or anything else to fiddle with. When you're ready to share your location, enter an email address or search your contacts. Select a contact, email or text message number and set a duration you'd like the person to be able to see your location. Seconds later, your recipient receives a link. If they are on a laptop or PC, they will see you on a Google Map -- it can be street or satellite view. Your icon will be moving in near real time, and your speed will be displayed. If you have selected a destination, it will show up on the map as well. It doesn't get easier than that. If the other person has Glympse on their phone, they have the option to have the app's built-in map display your location. If you want to cut off a viewer before their allotted time is up, you can "expire" them. You can send your location to multiple people, which they can view simultaneously. I've used the app to let people know that I'll be late for a meeting or to display my position in traffic. You can also share your locations to Facebook or Twitter. PSA: Change your old Amazon.com password for better security
http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/30/psa-change-your-old-amazon-com-password-for-better-security/
Amazon's allegedly got an security flaw where hackers can find your password much easier than they would otherwise, and there's already a fix in place. But get this -- you'll probably need to change your password for the fix to take effect, if you haven't already done so in the last couple of years. According to Reddit users, the Amazon.com login system will actually accept any phrase so long as it begins with your password, such as "password123" when the magic word is simply "password" by itself. That apparently makes it that much easier for a computer to guess your password via brute force methods, no matter how counter-intuitive that seems, so if you simply change it immediately -- and to something other than "password," please -- you'll have much sounder dreams.PSA: Change your old Amazon.com password for better security originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 30 Jan 2011 15:39:00 EDT. Amazon patents method to stop bad gifts en route
http://www.ubergizmo.com/2010/12/amazon-patents-method-to-stop-bad-gifts-en-route/?ref=rss
When it comes to receiving gifts, we sometimes get stuff that we absolutely loathe, perhaps it is due to the insensitivity or plain thick skull of the giver. Amazon might just change that, as they are on the verge of revolutionizing online gift-giving after securing a patent for a system which allows folks to return unwanted presents before they even receive them. This new procedure will enable registered Amazon users to “convert” all gifts from a specific giver, which would allow them to create a list of people whose gift choices would be screened before shipment. Of course, this will require complicated algorithms that would form a “wizard” which guides users through the process of creating rules in order to redirect purchases from a hypothetical sender. Of course, you can also take advantage of the option for sending Thank You notes – now that’s a nice touch! E-retailers might not be too happy with this since returned purchases equals to additional costs such as shipping, storage and labor. Intercepting your gift before it arrives? Neat! Self-sterilizing door handle
http://www.ubergizmo.com/15/archives/2010/12/self-sterilizing_door_handle.html
Remember Jack Nicholson's character from As Good As It Gets? That man certainly had an unhealthy paranoia with cleanliness, wearing gloves and using them at just about any and every opportunity. If you happen to freak out at the thought of countless dirty public hands running through a door handle, then you might wish that the self-sterilizing door handle had been invented and implemented already. In theory, this concept is pretty self-explanatory, relying on ultraviolet (UV) light to kill off those nasty germs that your eyes cannot see. After all, isn't prevention better than cure? Surely something like this will see the drop in common communicable diseases, but we do hope that it will be energy efficient enough should it actually roll off the production line one of these days.

Sixty-nine years ago, on December 7th, 1941, the Imperial Japanese Navy launched a surprise attack against the United States naval base in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Over 350 Japanese aircraft attacked in two waves, strafing, dropping bombs and torpedoes. Four U.S. Navy battleships were sunk, four other battleships were damaged, and eight other ships were either sank or damaged. 188 U.S. aircraft were destroyed, 2,402 personnel were killed and 1,282 were wounded. The following day, the United States declared war on Japan, officially entering World War II. This year's 69th anniversary coincides with the dedication of a new $56 million Pearl Harbor visitors center. Collected here are photos from that infamous day. So they drew "A is for Akbar," a delightful, pastel illustrated alphabet from the Star Wars universe. The Boat That’s Always Sinking
http://www.mentalfloss.com/blogs/archives/72787
As a work of art, Julien Berthier’s boat Love-love probably creates a lot of praise and wonderment. As a boat, it probably makes a few people alarmed or just plain angry. That’s because the boat is designed specifically to look like it’s sinking – and a sinking boat tends to cause some chaos out on the water. But, once a fellow sailor on the sea realizes that the boat and its Captain aren’t in any immediate danger, I’m sure they have a quite a laugh at its unique design. Get a load of these pictures and video of the boat in action – and you will probably chuckle too.

"Hollywood star Johnny Depp has made an unannounced visit to a London primary school after receiving a letter from one of its pupils. The actor turned up at the school in Greenwich, South London, dressed as his Pirates of the Caribbean alter-ego Captain Jack Sparrow. He said nine-year-old Beatrice [Delap] had written to Captain Jack, asking him to lead a mutiny against her teachers."

Ottomanelli Brothers Wins the Luxist Awards' Readers' Choice Award for Best Online Meat
http://feeds.luxist.com/click.phdo?i=34a0cc18aadd828884b3b8d70862957f
Ottomanelli Brothers is the winner of the Readers' Choice Award for Best Online Meats. Since 1900, it has been catering to the carnivores of New York City with its unbeatable steaks, filet mignon, steak burgers, prime rib, lamb, veal, seafood and more. Savvy New Yorkers traveling throughout New England are easily spotted by the Ottomanelli's green thermal bags they carry, which are filled with the butcher's delicious steaks, steak burgers, chicken, sausages and more. As Ottomanelli die-hards can attest, once you've been spoiled by eating Ottomanelli's meats, it is impossible to dine on anything else.
A family-owned and operated business that dates back to 1900, members of the Ottomanelli family are still found clad in their white aprons behind the counters of their butcher shops. Today under the leadership of the fourth and fifth generation of Ottomanelli's, products are enjoyed by discerning consumers across the country and around the world. Family patriarchs and co-chairmen, Nicolo and Joseph Ottomanelli are credited with turning the family meat business into a multifaceted mini-empire, which includes meat markets, cafes, packaged goods, bakeries and a thriving online operation. Gallery: Ottomanelli Brothers
The Ottomanelli brothers butcher shops are located on the upper east and upper west sides of Manhattan with a third location located in Flushing, N.Y. New Yorkers who'd rather sit down and order a delicious grilled steak can frequent one of the family's restaurant locations on Manhattan's upper east side.
All products are flash frozen and packed with dry ice in a reusable "keep fresh" cooler and shipped via FedEx Priority Overnight Service. Ottomanelli's also offers a selection of BBQ sauces (hot and mild are both offered), delicious steak sauce and wonderful pasta sauces (including marinara, white clam, red clam and Alfredo varieties). Orders can be placed online or by calling Ottomanelli's toll free number at (888) OTTOBRO. Chase Mobile Now Offering Check Deposits Via iPhone
http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/Inquisitr/~3/gHRvXEunBug/
Too lazy or busy to head to the bank to deposit checks? Fear not! Just purchase an iPhone and you can now deposit those checks right over your phone. One catch, you have to be a Chase bank customer. The new iPhone app [iTunes link] allows users to send checks to their account by snapping a photo from the front and back of their checks and then choosing the deposit option. The program also initiates person-to-person QuickPay as long as you have that persons e-mail address. Currently there are a few restrictions, for example you can’t deposit more than $1000 per day or $3000 per week. What do you think? Have you tried the application yet, if you have let us know your first reactions.

Is it time to reconsider Google Buzz vs Facebook or Twitter?
http://scobleizer.com/2010/06/13/is-it-time-to-reconsider-google-buzz-vs-facebook-or-twitter/
OK, Google Buzz has been out several months now (you can see my Google Buzz items on my Google profile page). When it first came out lots of people tried it. But they just as quickly went away. I know, I have 10,000 people following me there but many haven’t been back since the early weeks. Plus, Google got a lot of bad PR because when you setup that service it shared your social graph publicly. One problem: Google Buzz’s social graph is based on the one you built up inside Gmail. That’s potentially troublesome. Google fixed that problem after a few days, letting you hide your social graph, among other fixes, but that bad aftertaste still exists. For a while it seemed like the service was going to be a ghost town. But lately it’s been coming back. I’m getting more engagement on my items there than on Twitter or Facebook. Personally it’s more fun, but more on that in a second. Why is it coming back? 1. Google has been consistently adding features. It now is pretty close to matching FriendFeed (or it will be after they ship a few features I’ve been given early access to). 2. The community is great. I see a lot of great photography. Great discussions of news stories. And great conversations about tech. You only have to see my iPhone vs. Sprint EVO thread to see the value there. 3. The team is visible. There’s a Google Buzz page for the team, they are interacting with us on the site and in public (especially true at the Google IO conference, which makes sense). 4. The mobile features, especially on Android, are way ahead of other social networks like Twitter or Facebook. 5. Google has not yet deleted anyone’s accounts or punished people unfairly the way Twitter or Facebook have. 6. Google’s infrastructure is famous for being very scalable and having high uptime and that’s true on Buzz, too. Everytime Twitter is down I head over to Buzz. I can’t remember ever seeing Buzz down, actually. I think there might have been one time, but it was so short I don’t remember. Funny, while writing this post I saw the fail whale on Twitter twice. The only problem on Buzz that I’ve seen is that sometimes it gets a bit slow. 7. The search engine actually works. On Twitter, try to find old Tweets. You can’t. But on Google Buzz my old items are still searchable. At least so far. Of course the system isn’t very old so that’s not very fair to Twitter. 8. I wonder if there’s an SEO opportunity here. According to compete.com my blog’s traffic has been heading up all year since Google Buzz came out. Are my posts being helped by also being on Buzz and by my having a great YouTube site and a great Google Profile — all linking together? Or is it that I’ve been doing more good content lately? I don’t know, but I don’t want to stop doing Buzz just to find out. Makes sense that Google might be rewarding sites that support Buzz, doesn’t it? I’m sure Matt Cutts will jump in and say there’s nothing going on here, but Google is definitely putting more real time stuff into its search results, so this is something I’ll be watching the SEO experts to test out. 9. It’s been getting an identity that’s different than either Facebook or Twitter. Mostly thanks to being able to post long items, but also because its aggregator works better than Facebook’s does and also because photos show up in big, glorious, color. See Thomas Hawk’s items for an example of how different Buzz is. Anyway, add this all together and I’m wondering if it’s time to reconsider Google Buzz? Now, there are still some significant negatives. 1. Google Buzz desperately needs noise control. For instance, there are lots of people still bringing their Tweets in there and those Tweets are almost always low quality. I want to tell Buzz to not display anyone’s Tweets. But I can’t do that yet because Buzz has no noise control features. 2. Google Buzz desperately needs separate lists that I can put people on. Everyone is fed together in one long feed. I want to separate out people like I can on Twitter with Twitter lists, which are massively awesome. 3. There aren’t nearly as many clients for Google Buzz as there are for Twitter, but I’m starting to see a few previously-Twitter-only clients now supporting Google Buzz. Seesmic is one, but only on their Windows app so far. 4. There are dramatically fewer brands on Google Buzz, especially in the news departments. Plus dramatically fewer people. So, until Buzz gets more popular you’ll still be forced to read most of your friends on either Facebook or Twitter. 5. Google Buzz isn’t yet available as a service that’s separate from Gmail. That’s a real bummer. 6. Google Buzz still doesn’t give you enough control over the display. For instance, popular items still pop up to the top and you can’t force the site to be strictly reverse-chronilogical like Twitter or Facebook are. But back to why I’m having more fun on Buzz. There’s something that’s fun about being able to have a conversation. Over on Twitter it just seems everyone is shouting at me “read my blog, click my links, watch my videos.” I’m guilty there too, because that’s what Twitter really has become. Trying to be two-way over there is very difficult, actually causes too much noise, and even if you do it having a conversation there is really disjointed and not nice. Plus, the folks over on Google Buzz are early adopters. They are pioneers. Late adopters don’t show up, so the conversations are fun and interesting. If I want to talk to late adopters I just go to my local bar. Online I’m looking for something a bit more fun. Google Buzz has — for me — been getting better. Is it a Twitter or Facebook killer yet? No way. But if it keeps being updated I can see an interesting world taking shape here and, certainly, one that brands and geeks should certainly be putting into their media mix. What do you think? What would get you to use Google Buzz instead of Twitter or Facebook?
