I have country ham & you don't

So I got home today after a pretty long day week to a very, very nice surprise: Kentucky country ham and home-made yeast rolls. DELICIOUS!!

It was just like when I was a little boy. Country ham biscuits were always the best part of Christmas growing up, and this surprise was totally unexpected and TOTALLY awesome!!!

Let the hacks commence

I am *very* interested in getting an Apple TV, however, I have to hold off because the out-of-the-box Apple TV does not yet do everything I need.

For those not familiar, Apple TV streams anything an iPod could play directly from the iTunes installs on your network - which is great. However, it will not play Divx, Xvid, etc - which is not so great, as most of our digital movie library is in a "non-iPod" format. So… my options are convert hundreds of gigabytes to mp4 (which could *literally* take months) or wait until the hackers crack the Apple TV.

So… let the Apple TV hacks commence. :-)

10.4.9 = bye, bye shyCal

Finally! Apple has squashed the dreaded shyCal bug in the latest update to OS X - 10.4.9. I was actually getting to the point where I wouldn't use alarms in iCal because they were always appearing off the screen. Happiness restored!

First Sunburn of the Year

Well, it's March 11th and I've got my first sunburn - that didn't take long. ;)

I started in the yard this morning around 10a and finished up around dinner. I got the lawn mowed, edged, etc. Then, I leveled a 9' x 3' strip in the backyard for new garden beds. (I never expected that to be the intense project that it was!)

With the leveling finished, I laid garden fabric, cut cedar for two new planters and put those together. I went ahead and added a rock walkway to match the rest of the garden. Afterwards, I loaded those planters with organic soil so they'll be ready for my plants this week.

I really didn't expect to work that hard today, but it was such a pretty day, I just kept going. Kinda like when Forrest Gump went for a run and ended up running for 3 years, 2 months, 14 days, and 16 hours, right?!

Once I get the garden planted, I'll update my garden set on Flickr.

Long story short - very tired, very sore and *very* sunburned. :)

UPDATE: I just checked and… no, we don't have any elephant lube.

Note to self: Get some elephant lube.

Wii bowled

Merrin & I finally broke out the Nintendo Sports Wii Bowling last night. It was **awesome**. Neither one of us are good bowlers, but we had a lot fun and even had a few strikes.

Regardless of what you may hear, I let her win. ;)

Garden Update: Organic Soil

My efforts to reinvigorate my soil through direct composting seems to be working, although I'm pretty lean in most of the planter boxes. To supplement my soil, I'm going to be adding Miracle-Gro Organic - an oxymoron if ever there was one - as well as Black Kow composted manure. I'm a little worried that I'll be nitrogen heavy, so I guess we'll have to watch the mix and test the soil a few times this spring.

I'm now giving some thought to adding a butterfly garden to the perimeter of my garden beds. Of course, the way the wind is out here sometimes, they might not stick around long!

I really want to thank Josh for helping me get started last year and for turning me on to a new hobby that I really enjoy. He's beaten me to the punch on some plantings, but it looks like we're both going to have nice gardens this year (although his garden is about 40 times bigger!)
