Huh. You don't say.

Did you know that you can grow your own luffa? I did not know that.

I ask, you answer: Fried Chicken

Merrin really wanted fried chicken tonight, so I offered to go a little out of the way to get her favorite: Church's Fried Chicken. It's beyond me why someone would prefer Church's over… say… God's own special blend of fast food fried spices found only in Kentucky Fried Chicken, but… whatever.

(Caveat: The best fried chicken in the world is found at Babe's in Keller, TX. Period.)

But it prompts the question:

Which fried chicken do you prefer? Church's? KFC? Popeye's? [Insert brand here]? Eww, fried chicken?

And, while we're at it, which piece(s) is your fave?

I'm a breast & legs man, myself. :D

Ahh, nuts: FSU picked for Emerald Bowl

Florida State is headed to San Franscisco for the Emerald Bowl on Wednesday, December 27th to face either Oregon or Arizona. Details on the Bowl Week activites are online if you're thinking about going. (I mean, it is San Francisco, after all, right? :))

And for those of us staying at home - ESPN HD, brother.

Merrin & I on Jost Van Dyke, BVI

When I was on the ladder last night putting up the Christmas lights, I made the mistake of having Kenny Chesney's Be As You Are on my playlist. That album has a Pavolvian effect on me - a couple songs and I'm on Expedia looking for flights from here to St. Somwhere.

This picture was taken on Jost Van Dyke, B.V.I., just outside Foxy's bar on our amazing trip to the Virgin Islands in May.

Oh I wish I was there tonight on Jost Van Dyke
Sipping on some Foxy's Firewater rum
Or kickin' back with Ivan
With all my friends down in the islands
Wouldn't take much for me to up and run
To another life somewhere in the sun

Wordpress Category Feeds

I've added category feeds in addition to my main blog RSS feed.

If you're interested in doing the same, here's the code I used in my Sidebar template:

<?php wp_list_cats('sort_column=name&optioncount=1&feed=RSS&feed_image=icon_url'); ?>

The command shows the Category list alphabetically, along with the archive count, and an image link to the RSS feed. To do the same on your Wordpress blog, replace the icon_url with the your own image URL (ex: http://www.this.com/that.gif). There's more template tags available in the Wordpress Codex, so go nuts.

The resulting list looks like this:

  • Browsers RSS (16)
  • Buffett RSS (17)
  • China RSS (5)
  • College Football RSS (54)
  • Computer Tips & Tricks RSS (132)
  • Confessions RSS (22)
  • del.icio.us RSS (137)
  • Everyday Genius RSS (40)
  • FSU RSS (85)
  • Garden RSS (18)
  • Gmail RSS (12)
  • How To RSS (37)
  • Ice Cream Talk RSS (9)
  • iTunes RSS (13)
  • Mac RSS (54)
  • MovableType RSS (11)
  • Pop Culture RSS (22)
  • Search RSS (16)
  • Stuff I Love RSS (6)
  • Tacos RSS (11)
  • Tivo RSS (3)
  • Uncategorized RSS (2029)
  • Weblogs RSS (132)
  • Wordpress RSS (7)
  • Xbox RSS (11)
  • So, if you like it when I'm geeky but could do without the football talk, there's probably a category feed or two of interest to you.

How did we ever get by without this?

Twisted Sister - Twisted ChristmasFiled under "How did we ever get by without this?", it's the Twisted Sister Twisted Christmas album.

Heavy metal versions of Christmas songs are one thing, but when "O Come All Ye Faithful" begins sounding like "We're Not Gonna Take It" it's a whole new season. Each of the songs gets a Twisted tweak, but none more so than "Heavy Metal Christmas" which is the TS version of "The Twelve Days of Christmas". Forget the partridge and turtle doves, leaping lords and other dumb gifts, and get the heavy metal gift list instead:

On my heavy metal Christmas my true love gave to me,
    12 Silver crosses
    11 Black mascaras
    10 Pairs of platforms
    9 Tattered t-shirts
    8 Pentagrams
    7 Leather jackets
    6 Cans of hairspray
    5 Skull earrings
    4 Quarts of Jack
    3 Studded belts
    2 Pairs of spandex pants
    And a tattoo of Ozzy!

Extra points awarded for TS for having the guts to twist Christmas.
Merry Christmas to all, and to all a twisted Christmas.

To echo what one reviwer said, this is probably not the holiday CD for your parish priest.

Mac Bug: iCal alarms appear mostly off-screen

Every since I got my 10.4.8 update to OS X, iCal alarms have been appearing mostly off the screen. It seems a lot of people are having this same problem and Apple is working on it (see Bug ID# 4759919).

Steven Frank accuratley dubbed the behavior "shyCal", with a screenshot of the alarm display problem, although mine is off to the right side. Weird.

I've tried blanking the plist. I've tried repositioning before closing (heck, ya have to!), but –so far– there are no quick fixes.

If anyone sees a resolution for this, please email me or hit me on chat. Thanks!

Change cell carriers without buying a new phone

The US Copyright Office has approved a request to permit cell phone users to "unlock" their cell phones. The decision will allow cell phone users to change carriers without having to buy a new phone.

The new rules will take effect Monday and expire in three years.

In granting the exemption for cell phone users, the Copyright Office determined that consumers aren't able to enjoy full legal use of their handsets because of software locks that wireless providers have been placing to control access to phones' underlying programs.

So, as long as your moving to a new carrier with the same technology, you will be able to "unlock" your cell phone and use it on the new network. The obvious exception is Sprint/Nextel, as they use a different format than Cingular, T-Mobile, Verizon, et al.

    Megapixels, schmegapixels

New York Times writer David Pogue has field tested and debunked the myth that higher mexapixel cameras take better pictures.

Pogue had a professional photo lab print out one photo (16" x 24") at 13, 8, and 5-megapixels. He then posted the photos side-by-side in Times Square and asked people to pick the "best looking" photos. Dozens of people gave up, saying there was no difference. Only one woman - a photography professor - was able to pick the highest resolution photo. (Pogue contends she may have been a lucky guesser).

In theory, you should be able to tell the higher resolution, but the reality is that it is very hard for humans to discerne a substantial difference at 5-megapixels or above, regardless of the photo subject.

So… for those of you who are looking for digitial cameras this year, just keep Pogue's test in mind. Hold off on the super-pixel cameras and just buy the 5-ish megapixel camera that meets your needs.
