Good neighbor? Hmph!
I'm getting a little tired of seeing State Farm commercials on TV. You know the ones where the State Farm agent interacts with the people that have the insurance? Yeah - that shit never happens.
My State Farm agent? He doesn't even know my name. I've had the same guy for five years, paying jacked up Texas rates, been in his office at least five times - never met the man. I'm just saying.

Vonage?
Is anyone using Vonage? We've got a really fast cable connection (2.4 MBps) and we could save about $400/year if we went with a premium unlimited plan for $24.99. We could keep our same local number, plus we could set up local numbers in Fort Worth, Tampa, KY, etc.
They don't require a contract and you can get an adapter free from Vonage or free with rebate from Amazon. It wouldn't work during a long power outage, but the cable modem, routers, and (potentially) Vonage box are on a UPS, so two hours or so would be OK.
They've got a money back guarantee and some folks seem to be using it. Thoughts?

Turkey day thoughts…
…maybe that 9 foot tall, 6 foot wide Christmas tree is a little…full.
…who's going to blow the Horn of Plenty Thanksgiving trumpet at the Cooper's house to announce that it's turkey time?
…did the Coopers put their wishbones under their pillows last night so the Majestic Pumpkin of Thanks will bring turkey, dressing balls & a cornocopia of good eats this year? I hope so.
…where's my drink?
…raising a glass to my wonderful wife, our families, great friends near & far, good jobs, hearty laughs, and the chance to enjoy all of them for even one more day.

Secure your wireless connection
You have a four day weekend with the holidays, people. Grant tried NetStumbler on his drive home and found dozens of unsecured wireless connections.
I'm being serious here. If you have a wireless connection, you need to check it. My neighbor still has his wide open. I could use his connection to download a lot of illegal stuff and he'd be on the hook. I could delete his files, anything. Between seconds of mashed potatos and dressing balls, take a minute and lock down your wireless connection.
Don't believe me? Think you're safe? Listen, wireless security is a story on CNN, it's a real issue. OK? Fix it. And pass the gravy.

Adding HTMLArea to MovableType
When I saw the demo of TypePad, the one thing that really stood out to me was the really cool edit entry interface. It turns out that the interface is HTMLArea, a very cool WYSIWYG front end.
Arvind has documented the process for adding HTMLArea to MovableType. I'm thinking this is the perfect solution for my college football blog. We've got lots of authors that don't do English, let alone HTML.
My one concern is that I've heard that it produces some fairly sloppy code. Now, "sloppy code" is a very subjective thing. I'm mostly concerned with it working versus meeting every single web standard. Anybody have any experience with HTMLArea?

Full blown holiday
The holidays start in earnest today at Chez Donahue. Yes, I'm still pretty sick. Merrin's mom will be in route shortly with greyhounds in tow for a few days of champagne & turkey.
I think we're even doing a Coopahues Thanksgiving dinner. (No word yet on the fish cupcakes.) It will be a different pace from last year when we had both families under one roof.
If you're not in the holiday spirit yet, you've still got a few hours. I'm trimming the blog for the holidays later. Tomorrow night (amid champagne toasts) we'll sit down and enjoy the best holiday tradition of them all. By this time on Friday, the new le naturale tree isn't going in the yard, Russ, it's going in our living room.
PS - Is it wrong for me to have an evil grin about the Coopers coming home from Hawaii today? It was 41 this morning (36 with wind chill) and the low tonight is 35. Yeah, Aloha, ninjas.

Trackback & Pingback enabled at CNET
CNET knows that Geeks love talking about all things geek. They also know that we've got lots of opinions on the the stories & reviews they publish. That's why CNET now has trackback support. Great job of being near the front of the pack (for mainstream media, anyway). CNET is dialed in to the power of blogs.
