One ring to control them all
One of the gripes around Chez Donahue is that our remote situation is out of control. Like a lot of folks with a nice surround sound system, DirecTivo, TV, DVD, and VCR in one room, we've got more than our fair share of remotes. The lovely Mrs. Donahue would like one universal remote that can rule them all, but that has always been tricky because most of the universal remotes suck, quite frankly, when it comes to duplicating the simplicity of the Tivo remote.
Until now….

Picture Pages
Josh finally uploaded his pictures from the San Antonio trip. I don't remember half of the photos being taken, but we sure did have a good time. I'm going to get some prints of a couple of the better photos.

Windows XP SP2 CD available free
As part of their security initiative, Microsoft is offering Windows XP SP2 update on cd at no charge. Even if you already have SP2 for Windows XP from Windows Update, I highly recommend requesting a XP SP2 CD. It's 100% free of charge - not even shipping costs. Keep it on hand — just in case — because having the cd is a lot easier than downloading the update all over again if you have to reinstall. If you've got friends/neighbors/mothers-in-law who are on dial up, share it with them, as well. Shipping time is 4-6 weeks, but your mileage may vary.

Osama: Vote Kerry
If you're a Kerry supporter, it ought to be an eye opener when your candidate shares the same beliefs as Osama bin Laden. Even Dems on the net are noticing.
Bin Laden: "Even as you enter the fourth year after the Sept. 11 attacks, Bush is still misleading and deluding you and hiding the real reason from you."
Kerry: "Unfortunately, in its desperate attempts to reinvent a rationale for the Iraq war, this White House has repeatedly chosen to mislead the American people."
(CNN quote of John Kerry speaking on 9-12-04)
The polls are starting to notice as well. Newsweek: Bush 50 Kerry 44. The Bush streaking, Kerry fading trend is starting to snowball. Michael Barone of US News & World Report theorizes:
Another theory, held by some Democrats as well as Republicans, is that voters will decide not to switch presidents in time of war and will surge toward Bush. Possibly spurring such a reaction is the increasingly vitriolic tone of the Kerry campaign and the 527 organization ads against Bush. The Kerry campaign deliberately tried to avoid that tone at its convention and sounded it again only in September after Bush built up a post-convention lead. But there can be a backlash to vitriol, as Minnesota Democrats discovered after the bile unleashed at Paul Wellstone's funeral in 2002. Demo-crats, living in a cocoon where Bush hatred is universal and unexceptionable, failed to anticipate that. Have they made the same mistake again?
In other words, the politics of vitriolic hate — your Michael Moore, Howard Dean, Al Gore screaming rage — don't reflect the values of most Americans. I mean, yeah - Osama's down with it, but…where does that leave you?

Yeah for technology
"Next generation" breast implants begin clinical trials
"Elast-Eon is a very clean material that is free of the silicone oil that has been leaching out of gel-filled devices for the past 20 to 30 years. And we can move back into the softer range that more naturally simulates breast tissue."
Baby bed rocks crying babies back to sleep
It automatically rocks after the child cries for more than 30 seconds. If they cry for more than two continuous minutes, despite rocking being activated, it signals to the parents' handheld device that something is wrong, by sounding an alarming and activating flashing lights and a vibrating signal.

Konfabulator for Windows
It looks like Konfabulator is on a 10-day examination of "how two very different things can be the same". Is this a sign that the Konfabulator for Windows launch is ten days out? (previously)

Twilight Zone
Weird. Weird. Weird. On an average day, we get some junk mail and some bills (sometimes several bills!) Today's mail? Five checks and some coupons. More unbelievable? Today was bonus check payout day at work.
It's like I came home to the Twilight Zone.

As if you needed another reason to hate the media
The big networks (and the cable networks, to some degree) wonder why people can't stand them. Americans are voting with their fingers over the past few years and turning the knobs. We've moved from big print newspapers like the New York Times to online media. Why? Media bias.
Case in point:

Hypothetical
What if a nationally publicized author and PhD contacted me claiming trademark infringement? Wouldn't that be a hoot?
What if this person, who has a book on Amazon for about $2.55, contacted me and wanted to argue that one phrase on this page was subject to her trademark? How hard would milk shoot out my nose? Pretty hard.
Just in case you needed clarification, this is a non-commercial website. I'm not selling anything.
How someone could –hypothetically– claim that anything on this page impacts some hypothetical authors book sales is (if you'll excuse my use of a clinical term, here) coo-coo.

'A Serious, Sober Look Around'
One of the nation's most liberal newspapers, The Austin American-Statesman, has decided to endorse President Bush for re-election. Their endorsement is full of practical advice for the country in general and for the President, specifically. I don't agree with some points they make, but it is a surprisingly fair assessment.
