Triple Cursed

I swear I'm triple cursed to being the victim of people who have no manners. Why? Because I'm exceptionally polite. Why? I have identified three main reasons.

  1. I'm from the South. I was raised in a small town, just up the road from my great-grandmother as well as my grandmother & grandfather. Translation: If I acted up at my great-grandmothers, I got spanked there. Then she would call my grandmother & grandfather and I would get another spanking on the way home. Then they would call my mother and I'd get another spanking. And then, it was, "Just wait until your father gets home. So, from a very early age, I was raised to treat everyone with respect and to always use my manners. Anytime you get spanked four times for getting out of line, the message hits home pretty quick. Even today, it's "yes, ma'am", "no, ma'am", "please", "thank you", "yes, sir", "no sir", and so on.
  2. I live in Texas. It is just expected that the men are going to open the doors, pull out the chairs, and act as gentlemen. You may not see it as much in "the city", but you definitely can observe this behaviour almost anywhere in Texas.
  3. I work in the hospitality industry. Let's be honest: I'm in sales at a resort. If there is anyone at the entire resort that you expect to always be courteous, friendly and in a great mood - it's got to be one of the sales guys, right?

So here's my curse: No one else seems to realize what manners are anymore. If I say, "Good morning," to someone on the street, it's because it just comes naturally to me. But people just look at you like you stepped off a flying saucer. I have manners - that's all. I'm not an alien or have three eyes or anything.

If I hold open the door for a lady, all of a sudden it's like a clown car showed up and 30 more people walk through. How many of them say thank you? Zero. How many guys "tag in" and take over the door holding? Zip. GRR!

Listen, people, if someone says, "Good morning!" to you out on the street, the proper retort is, "Good morning!" If someone says, "How are you doing today?" There are hundreds of possible responses, so use them. Don't just ignore them. If you're walking down a hallway and someone smiles at you or nods, return the courtesy!

Is it just me?! Are you trying to be polite to a world that just needs a good spanking…or four spankings?! Someone tell me that I'm not the last one out there, or –if I am– at least let me know so I can quit caring so much! Jeepers!

A little thing called "responsibility"

I think I had promised no politics for a while. Because of that little promise, I must advise you that this is not a political post. Instead I'd like to take a second and remind some yahoos of a little term we like to call "personal responsibility."

Amazon.com Wishlist on your Webpage

Whether you have a blog or not, Adam has come up with a way to display your Amazon.com wishlist on your webpage. Very cool and easy to implement. Works great if you don't want to install the MTAmazon plugin or if you don't have MoveableType! Adam also posted a tip (in the comments) for formatting your Wishlist display! Even better!

Creating a Sideblog

Having seen some great "sideblogs" across the internet (Christine's Crumbs, Movablog's Asides, and many others) I'm inspired to add a Sideblog to my own MT-powered blog. Anders created a short "how-to" for those who are not using php and it has inspired me to create a php version here.

Official Version

For those that haven't heard or didn't draw their own conclusions from her blog, Merrin resigned her position at B&N yesterday. There was a lot of stuff going on and it simply turned out to be the right thing to do. I couldn't be prouder of her. She was put in a no-win situation and did the absolute right thing. I love ya, Merrin, and I'm proud of you.

If the phone doesn't ring…

The National DoNotCall Registry is up and running. In just a few hours yesterday, more than 635,000 numbers were added to the list.

Once your on the list, telemarketers will not be able to call you. You can register up to three phone numbers at once online at www.donotcall.gov. One more note, the website is getting hammered pretty hard by traffic, so it may not be accessible on your first try.

Go register your phone numbers and don't forget to thank your friendly neighborhood Republican for putting an end to telemarketers.

Giving your blog a voice

Ultra-kudos to Dane Carson (via Josh) who has posted the code to use the AT&T Labs Text to Speech converter to read your blog. Who ever said you can't have a voice online? Heck, you can even pick the voice!

How's it work, I don't know. I'll give it a shot for a week or so.

To implement on your page, take the code on Dane's page and add it to your MovableType individual Entry template or your main index template (inside the <MTEntries> tags).

Hang in there

Merrin is having a tough day today. She just called me with some potentially upsetting news. I'm on pins & needles waiting for her 1:00p meeting. All I can say is hang in there, sweetheart. I love ya!

Ice Cream Cones

It's hot out. I'm hungry. Let's talk ice cream.

I'm gonna make this a recurring theme this summer, so we'll cover lots of topics, but ice cream talk has to start with ice cream cone talk. So, your thoughts and comments are appreciated!

Which do you prefer?

Standard Cone Waffle Cone

Personally, give me the standard cone. Yeah, it taste like Styrofoam. But, it's what God intended. I don't have a better reason. I just don't like waffle cones. The ice cream melts and then you can never get at it way down in the bottom of that thing!

How 'bout you? Standard cone or waffle cone?

Texas

The best part of July in Texas? 95-105 degree days? Nah. It's the margaritas on the rocks, the air-conditioned patios, the live music, and a couple of good friends laughing after work. Mmmm.

Snoop sets the record straight

Snoop Dog has found a new calling. He's out to show that "white girls ain't the only hos that get wild." Snoop is going to help produce a more "ethinically diverse" version of the Girls Gone Wild video. According to Snoop:

"If you notice, there hasn't been no girls of (ethnicity) at all on none of those tapes," Snoop Dogg complained during a recent interview. "No black girls, no Spanish girls–all white girls, and that (stuff) ain't cool, because white girls ain't the only hos that get wild."

Snoop Dogg said he plans to do his own version of "Girls Gone Wild" to "bring some flavor to the table" - and to satisfy women of color waiting for their chance to go topless for the camera.

Strike up another win for diversity thanks to Snoop.

I'm only gonna say this once

I'm only gonna say this one time.

A lot of people have learned the hard way. So much so, that you cannot go anywhere in the world without running into someone that knows the saying: "Don't Mess with Texas".

You had seriously better plan something else because I can promise you that a serious boot will be stuck quite deeply into a lot of people's asses if anything ever happens here.

Baited breath

I know "they" (whoever "they" are) say, "Don't hold your breath." Well, forget them. I'm holding my breath for my friend Jen and hoping that her lines are crossed.

Jen - I want an update in a couple of days, OK?!
