This does apply to new or used vehicles, as long as they meet the weight requirement.

Ask you tax professional (and maybe a local dealer) for the full documentation, but do it quick! The fiscal year is wrapping up and it has be on this year's taxes!

does this apply only to a new vehicle, or would a used qualifying vehicle also be afforded the same tax breaks?

My understanding is no, you cannot. You can only take the deduction as a business expense against your self employed business. I believe that the car has to be purchased by the business, also.

Check with your tax guy.

thank you so much!

I gotta say, I am very impressed with the new Dodge Dakota and the Dodge Durango. On the page I linked above, it lists the truck price which is fair, and some links to good reviews of the mean trucks. These trucks are really tough, and their SUVs are great too. I think Dodge leads the SUV and truck market.

I am not sure how this works. I am starting a new business this year. I have no income as of Nov. 1, 2003, but I bought a Dodge Ram 3500 for the purpose of towing vehicles I repair for resale. I presently have 9 such vehicles in my stable and have made $0. So how can I get the credit of $39K for my new truck???? Yes, I am currently employeed and plan to retire in 2 years. I am setting up the business to cover my retirement. Any advice would be appreciated. Even if it means to go talk with an accountant and proceed from there.
