How to install Backup in Windows XP Home

The Backup utility is not included in the default installation of Windows XP Home Edition. The Backup icon is not present on the Start menu in Windows XP Home Edition, nor is Backup listed in Add/Remove Programs for Windows XP Home Edition. The backup program is found on the Windows XP Home Edition CD in the Valueadd folder.

To manually install Backup

  1. Double-click the Ntbackup.msi file in the following location on the Windows XP Home Edition CD to start a wizard that installs Backup:

    CD-ROM Drive:\VALUEADD\MSFT\NTBACKUP
  2. When the wizard is complete, click Finish.

Kevin,

Thats great if you have the XP CD. Unfortunatey I am faced with a only recovery CD (E Machine) that does not do the job since the file was never installed. IF you, or anyone would send the file, I will appreciate it.

Thank you

Dale

I have the same problem as Dale. Where can I find this installation program? Please help,
Dave

Browse the entire cd within windows (Right click the drive and click Browse/Explore from My Computer). You should still find it in the value add folder, according to a friend with an e-machines restore cd. Have not tested myself, so your feedback is appreciated.

Dale,
Thanks for the help. I eventually found the installation file on the C:\VALUEADD\MSFT\ directory. Funny that the Sony Help files couldn't help me, but you did. Thanks for your email.

I am amazed that Microsoft did not install the Backup drive in Windows XP Home Edition. How stupid! How cheap! Making it dificult for the Home Edition customers. How ungrateful.
The response from the people above is only those who have e-machines. Do you get questions from the XP Home Edition users?

If you can't find the file on your cd, check to see if you can find it on your drive. Some OEMs are preloading it onto the hard drive now. Do a search (all directories and hidden files) for "valueadd".
